Mauna kea beach hotel
The renovation of Mauna Kea Beach Hotel honors one of Hawai‘i’s most iconic resorts, originally opened in 1965 by Laurance S. Rockefeller. Envisioned as a harmonious blend of architecture, landscape, and culture, the property has long been celebrated for its museum-quality collection of Asian and Pacific art. Building on this legacy, The Vanguard Theory approached the redesign of the suites, lobby, three restaurants, and retail outlets as both preservation and evolution—introducing a refined, contemporary language rooted in materiality, light, and a deep sense of place along the Kohala Coast.
Central to the design was a commitment to elevating local kamaʻāina artists, ensuring the hotel continues to function as a living gallery of Hawai‘i’s creative voices. Works by John Young, Madge Tennent, Yvonne Cheng, and Abigail Romanchak are thoughtfully integrated throughout the interiors, creating moments of cultural connection and storytelling. The result is a layered experience where heritage and modernity coexist—reaffirming the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel as a timeless expression of Hawaiian luxury.
