Red Fish

For a new poke bar concept from Foodland in Kaka‘ako, the design team drew on the supermarket’s own history to craft an interior concept that harked back to the 1950s while also honoring the company’s reputation for forward-thinking design. Inspired by the clean lines, checkerboard patterns, and signage of 1950s supermarket chains, the interiors use symmetry and color to organize the 1,500-square-foot space and curate sight lines. A palette of white, green, and orange is a reference to Foodland’s earliest stores on the windward side of Oahu while a retro marquee designed in collaboration with Honolulu agency Welcome Stranger wraps the white, diner-style bar. Porthole windows, glass block, and plaid banquets continue the retro atmosphere even as wood sculpture murals by local artist Nikole Nelson give the space a contemporary feel.
